Personal/Technical Info
The first section of the hardship letter should include your personal and technical information. Left justify this section, so it appears on the left side of the paper. Include the date, your full name, address, the lender name and loan number. Each of the preceding items should be listed on a separate line, totaling four lines. Leave one blank line after the loan number, and then address the letter to the appropriate person. If you do not know who to address, write “To whom it may concern” followed by a colon. Leave one blank line.
Reason for Hardship
The first sentence of the letter body should state the purpose of your letter. You may begin with “I am writing this letter to…” or “I am writing this letter because…” and complete the sentence with your personal reasons. Also include the prevention tool you are seeking, such as special forbearance. For example: I am writing this letter to ask for special forebearance on my mortgage because I am unable to make my mortgage payment since being laid off of my job. This section of the hardship letter should be direct and only a few sentences. Leave one blank line before beginning the next section.
Background Information
The background information of a hardship letter is a short summary of events that led to your current situation, and information about your current situation. In other words, briefly give your reasons and support or proof of hardship. Your reason for hardship could be because of an illness, loss of a job, military duty or divorce. Clearly write your reason for hardship and support it with dates, financial information or other relevant support. Also include how your sequence of events impacts your current situation. This portion of the letter should be limited to two paragraphs and additional documents can be enclosed. Leave one blank line before the next section.
Proposed Outcome
Finish the hardship letter with your proposed outcome. Be direct about your desired outcome by explaining what action you would like the lender to take. For example, tell them if you want a loan deferment, to make smaller payments or avoid foreclosure on a mortgage. Leave one blank line and then finish the letter with “Sincerely,” followed by another blank line, then your name and phone number. Your name and phone number should be on left justified and on two separate lines. Print the document and sign it above your printed name.
